With every automaker focused on the future with futuristic
designs and technologies not yet feasible today, Mercedes
decided to go way back and revive one of their past machines.
It has been 44 years since Mercedes discontinued the
convertible version of the S lineup of coupes which is the
automaker’s largest. After what seemed like an eternity, the
automaker is set to bring the 4-seater convertible that used to
roam the streets in the 50s back to the limelight.
Boy, the automaker is bent on making up for the cabriolets lost
time and intends to get to the top crushing any model on its
way. The model made its debut at this year’s Frankfurt Auto
Show. 2017 Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet will be offered in two
versions i.e. AMG S63 4MATIC Cabriolet and Mercedes S550
2017 Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet Exterior
The new 2017 Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet is based on the same
platform as the S-Class Coupe. At the front, the cabriolet will
feature extended headlights that are integrated with LED
daytime running lights. These lights flank a large hexagonal
grille and a stylishly carved hood. At the rear, you will find

Except for the roof top, the cabriolet and the S-Class coupe
appear almost identical. The cabriolet features a fabric roof
top which opens and closes at a push of a button up to speeds
of 37 mph. The roof top opens and closes in just 20 seconds.
The vehicle is availed in four colors which are gray, black,
dark blue and red.

The interior is luxurious, stylish and relaxed. The cabin
features a host of innovative technologies including moving the
sliding roof via the press of a button. The cabin features
premium materials and the latest technology in the industry so
as to enable the car to give the likes of Ashton Martin
Vanquish and Maserati GranTurismo convertible a run for their
The interior just like the exterior is similar to the coupe.
The only interior difference is the new intelligent air
conditioning system. The system is referred to as thermo-tronic
and ensures perfect air conditions whether the roof is up or
down. Leather trim is found on almost all surfaces with a
Silver Shadow accentuation. The coupe has a 2+2 seating layout
with deeply bolstered and sculptured rear seats.
The dash features dual-TFT displays that house the gauge
cluster and the navigation, entertainment and climate control
features. They are controlled by an interface on the center
console that has a touchpad for gesture-based commands and
handwritten inputs. Other standard features include LED
interior and exterior lighting, heated seats, a rearview
camera, a Burmester AM/FM/CD/SiriusXM audio system, power rear
window, Bluetooth connectivity, adaptive high beam and a
panorama roof. For buyers looking for more, they can opt for
the available options and packages.
For safety, Mercedes is always at the fore-front. The vehicle
comes with ABS and electronic stability control as standard.
The automaker also features a full package of driving aids as
standard to higher trims and as part of the Driver Assistance
Package to lower trim models.
Engine Specs and Performance
2017 Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet will be offered in two models
each with a different engine.
The S550 cabriolet will feature a twin-turbocharged 4.7 L V-8
engine which comes good with 449 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque.
The engine makes the 0-60 dash in 4.5 seconds. The engine is
paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission system.
Buyers looking for more power and speed can opt for the
Mercedes-AMG S63 which is equipped with a 5.5 L
twin-turbocharged V8 engine which produces 577 hp and 664 lb-ft
of torque. The powertrain helps the car drop the 0-60 mph
sprint to only 3.9 seconds and has an electronically limited
top speed of 186 mph.
Price and release date
The cabriolets will hit dealer showrooms in the spring of 2016.
The automaker is yet to set a final price for the model.
However, basing our estimate on the sister coupe, the 2017
Mercedes-Benz S550 Cabriolet will have a starting MSRP price
range of around $125,000-$130,000 while the S63 AMG is
likely to start close to $200,000.
