A new trend is catching up among luxury automakers. The new
trend involves converting SUV’s into Coupes. Unlike
conventional 2-door coupes with compact dimensions, the new
coupes come with four doors and with elongated dimensions like
a conventional SUV. The 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe is
based on the
GLC-Class compact SUV. It is Mercedes answer to BMW’s X4
Coupe. The model is Mercedes second such model after the
GLE-Class Coupe. The coupe comes in two trims i.e. the base
GLC300 and the AMG GLC43. Read along for more information:
2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe Exterior
The exterior maintains all the aggressiveness and versatility
of an SUV while introducing the sleek design of a coupe. The
result is a sleek looking SUV. At the front, the model features
a new grille with a single bar that bisects the huge “Mercedes
star”. The star is also surrounded by star-like elements. The
grille is also flanked by LED headlights.
The coupe rides on a set of 21-inch wheels which go a long way
to show its energetic profile. The sides also feature recessed
door handles and frameless side windows.
At the rear, the vehicle features taillights that mimic the
headlights. The automaker has also added chrome inserts along
the bottom of the rear fascia as well as around the exhaust
tips. The rear also features a beefed-up bumper. The most
attractive feature at the rear is the slanting roofline which
sees the rear fascia get a trunk-lid instead of the
In terms of dimensions, the Coupe has been elongated compared
to the standard GLC SUV. At 186.2 inches long and 63.0 inches
tall, the vehicle is 1.3 inches longer and 1.6 inches less tall
than the SUV. The extra length was essential to ensure a
stylish sloping roofline that earns it the “Coupe” tag.
2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe Interior
As you would expect of Mercedes, the cabin is very luxurious.
The cabin is offered in a two-tone color trim. A vanilla-like
color is used on the leather that wraps the lower part of the
door panels, dashboard and on other panels while brown leather
is used on the upper part of the dash and upper parts of the
door panels. The rest of the upholstery features the
vanilla-like color scheme.
Buyers can also opt for another interior trim that features a
gray and silver color scheme. The seats and door panels feature
diamond quilted leather. The upper parts of the door panels and
the center stack are separated by wood trim inserts. The model
also features as standard power operated driver’s seat,
sunroof, tailgate and side mirrors.
The instrument cluster has a two-gauge layout; a speedometer is
mounted on the left and a tachometer on the right. A small TFT
display is mounted between the two gauges and is used as the
driver’s information center. A 7.0-inch (8.4 inch screen is
optional) semi-integrated infotainment screen is mounted on the
Mercedes offers an Interior Sport package that adds a
flat-bottomed steering wheel, AMG floor mats and rubber
studded pedals on the GLC300. On the AMG GLC43 the package adds
sports seats upholstered in MB-Tex DINAMICA microfiber/man-made
leather or Bi-Color leather for those who go for a grey
interior. Red MB-Tex upholstery is offered as a standalone
option for the GLC300.
GLC SUV, the coupe has reduced headroom at the rear due to
its slanted roofline. However, a 6-foot passenger will fit in
just fine. As for the cargo capacity, the coupe will offer 18
cubic feet which can be expanded by folding the rear seats.
The model also features an array of safety technologies
including forward collision mitigation with emergency braking,
keyless entry and ignition, Lane keep assist, parking assist,
blind sport monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and automatic
cruise control among others.
Engine Specs and performance
The Coupe will be powered by two power-trains. The base GLC300
will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0 L, 4-cylinder engine
which produces 241 hp and. The engine is mated to a 9-speed
automatic transmission system.
The Coupe is offered in only AWD unlike the regular GLC.
For more power, buyers can opt for the AMG GLC43 Coupe which is
powered by a turbocharged 2.0 L, V-6 mill which produces 362
horses. The engine is also mated to a 9-speed
transmission system. Similarly, it is offered in AWD.
Price and release date
Mercedes has not disclosed the official prices of the 2017
Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe as of this writing. However, I believe
the model will retail at the same price range as the BMW X4.
Therefore, a starting price of around $45,000 is likely. The
Coupe will hit dealerships early next year.
